Yale Partners with University of Malaya to Launch

Connecticut resident Pareena Lawrence, Ph.D., has extensive experience in education, first as a college professor in economics, and then as an administrator. Currently, Dr. Pareena Lawrence is a fellow at Yale University where she is supporting Yale's South Asia Initiative.

More recently, Yale University news announced its collaboration with the University of Malaya (UM) in Kuala Lumpur to establish the Malaysian Implementation Science Training (MIST) center. The two schools were awarded a multi-million dollar grant to establish the center to facilitate research and training through the Fogarty International Program at the National Institutes of Health.

MIST is expected to launch sometime this fall (2020) and is designed to train the next generation of implementation science researchers. A new discipline, implementation science studies methods and strategies that contribute to evidence-based practices. In this context, the center will use the 15 years of research collaboration between the two universities to address major issues related to HIV, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, and addiction.

MIST will be a valuable addition to the country because, while new HIV infections in Asia have dropped by nine percent, Malaya is one of five countries experiencing an increase in both infection and mortality rates. Key populations affected include people who use drugs, sex workers, and prisoners.
